Meet Sri Lankan Researcher —Surath Gajanayake

What are you currently working on or worked on before?

I’m currently working on the development of a mathematical model for fuel economy characterization of Light-Duty Vehicles at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

My passion for automotive engineering and the timely requirement of developing a mathematical model for fuel economy labeling program in Sri Lanka encouraged me to pursue this research topic.

Where do you find your best inspiration for your work?

Mainly the passion to be innovative paves the way for me to be a researcher

The more I find out parallel research in my vertical, the more I’m inspired to do more work. Especially the inspiration that I get from my supervisors is one of the main drivers of me in the path of research. You can find more about my research work and publications here:

What’s one of your biggest personal achievements so far?

Getting a first-class honors degree and getting included on the Dean’s List is one of my biggest achievements in my academic career. On par with that, being selected for the direct Ph.D. at the University of Moratuwa is also one of my biggest achievements.

What lessons would you share with a budding researcher?

Always think innovative. Think out of the box for solutions. Look for simple solutions for simple problems whereas holistic solutions for complex problems. Be determined and passionate about what you do. Your dedication and passion are reflected in your work.

If there is a chance, will you help build research in Sri Lanka?

Definitely. Since my main research focus is on automotive engineering, I would like to share my knowledge with budding researchers and students. Sri Lanka is a country that could build what they need. One of my main intentions is to build local brands in the vertical of automotive engineering and help out youngsters who are passionate to do so.

According to your opinion, what are the changes that the Sri Lankan education system needs to do, in order to meet the requirement of the international industry and academia?

The link between the industry and academia should be stronger. Academia should perform timely research that is necessary for the industry. Industries should not be stagnated in technology and should be willing to adopt the new research findings of the academics.
